Drew Black was named Overall Small Animal Showman during Saturday’s Showman of Showmen competition, and Caleb Penwell was named Overall Large Animal Showman, wrapping up the 2015 Fayette County Junior Fair.

Black, a member of the 4-H Fun Bunch, has been showing for three years.

“I’m really happy,” Black said. “It’s been a good week.”

Black primarily shows poultry, but during the Showman of Showmen, each participant is required to show each species from the Small Animal category: rabbit, dog, chicken, duck, and turkey.

Because of the Avian Flu, however, the turkey, duck, and chicken category consisted of pictures of each bird and the judges asking questions of each of the five participants.

Each participant started with their original animal, before rotating to another animal to show off their skills as a showman. Each showman was given four minutes with each animal to prove that they were the best showman of the group.

When it came down to it, Hayleigh Bageant, who won Overall Dog Showman, was placed fifth, Alexis Schwartz, who won Overall Rabbit Showman, was placed fourth, Quinton Waits, who won Overall Duck Showman, took third, Dylan Page, who won Overall Chicken Showman, took second, and Black, who originally won Overall Turkey Showman, took Overall.

Contestants could earn up to 50 points for their knowledge and handling of each animal.

The large animal division consisted of steer, beef feeder, dairy projects, sheep, goats, hogs and a horse project. Ten total participants traveled to each animal, between the sales arena and the swine pavilion, and were given five minutes to display proper showmanship techniques, as well as answer additional questions such as, “How much does this animal weigh?” in the case of the beef steer and “How much per pound would this meat go for?” and other critical questions to the project.

After nearly two hours of showing, Penwell was named overall showman once a two-way tie was settled.

“It is awesome, I am out of words now, but it is really cool,” Penwell said. “I really want to thank all of those individuals who came out at night and explained how to show these animals, because I had no idea what I was doing. For me the sheep was the hardest. Remember 4-Hers to work hard because it will pay off in the end.”

The final results of the class were: Caleb Penwell, Overall Large Animal Showman; Cody Clyburn, second place; Victoria Schappacher, third place; Abbie Noble, fourth place, and Abbygail Pitstick, fifth place.
