Ohio is offering its first-ever sales tax holiday in August to help back-to-school shoppers reduce the cost of clothing and school supplies.
The holiday is this weekend, Aug. 7-9, and applies to clothing and footwear items that cost $75 or less and to supplies and instructional materials that cost $20 or less. Items priced higher than those limits aren’t eligible for the tax savings.
Locally,Tanger is inviting shoppers in the Jeffersonville area to enjoy the extra savings.
“While there’s still plenty of summer left, it’s never too early for shoppers to find great savings on the latest back to school looks for kids of all ages, as well as for our fine educators,” Tanger Outlets CEO Steven B. Tanger said. “Tax-free shopping weekends across the country are one of the best ways to save even bigger at Tanger.”
A list of eligible non-taxable items during the tax-free weekend is available at the State of Ohio’s website: www.tax.ohio.gov.
A news release from the Ohio Council of Retail Merchants says 1.1 million children and 500,000 college students in Ohio will be returning to school this fall. The release also says that $88 billion will be spent nationally on back-to-school items.
The retail merchants group says similar holidays are popular in other states. The Ohio Legislature passed a law last year authorizing the holiday.
