A traffic stop early Friday morning on West Court Street resulted in the recovery of a large amount of methamphetamine and the arrest of a Wilmington man for drug trafficking.

Andy S. Totten, 29, is being held in the Fayette County Jail on charges of trafficking in drugs, a third-degree felony; aggravated possession of drugs, a second-degree felony; and possession of drug paraphernalia, a fourth-degree misdemeanor.

At approximately 1:20 a.m. Friday, a Washington C.H. police officer observed a vehicle heading westbound on Circle Avenue that made a prohibited left turn onto Court Street, according to reports. The officer made a traffic stop and advised the man, identified as Totten, of the violation. A status check of Totten revealed that he possessed a suspended driver’s license.

While checking the inventory of the vehicle prior to its towing, the officer found a Monster Energy can in the front seat cup holder that had a false lid on it, according to reports. The officer opened it and saw an empty cavity inside the can. “The defendant made an excited utterance that ‘it is used for drugs but it’s empty,’” the report said.

In the trunk of the vehicle, the officer observed an open black bag with a purple Crown Royal bag inside with several clear cellophane bags and a metal spoon protruding from the top. While documenting the items, the officer also found a digital scale inside the bag. Totten was then placed under arrest for possession of drug paraphernalia.

The officer also found a green Melatonin pill container that contained 30 clear capsules with a white powder and a clear cellophane bag containing a white powder. The powder from the bag and the capsules later field tested positive for meth.

A black backpack contained another digital scale and a roll of clear plastic bags.

Totten’s vehicle was towed from the scene and he was transported to the Fayette County Jail. He was also issued a traffic citation for no operator’s license and failure to obey a traffic control device.
