The public is invited to the 10th-annual Fayette County Hometown Heroes recognition on Monday, Oct. 5 at the Crown Room Banquet Hall, located at 1801 Columbus Ave. in Washington C.H.

Each year, five or more Fayette Countians are chosen from a multitude of nominees as Hometown Heroes. According to the local Red Cross, the annual event highlights the values of courage, initiative, compassion, personal responsibility and humanity which underlie heroic actions that save lives and/or demonstrate an unusual degree of unselfish character.

The American Red Cross has held the Heroes Breakfast at the Mahan Building for the past nine years. “Unfortunately, due to budget cuts, we had to cancel the breakfast this year,” said Rod Cook, executive director for the Red Cross serving Fayette, Knox, Fairfield, Hocking, Pickaway and Ross counties. “However, this is such an important event in so many communities, we felt it was necessary to ensure that this year’s nominees were honored.”

The Record-Herald and Brian Pettit, owner and operator of the Crown Room and The Rusty Keg, are co-sponsoring the event this year with the Red Cross.

On Wednesday, the 2015 Hometown Heroes were unveiled in the Record-Herald: Chiquita Nash is the Adult Hero; John Meriweather is the Lifetime Achievement Hero; James “Jimmy” Clark is the Youth Hero; Kevin Robinette is the Public Safety Hero; and Steve and Vicki Horney are the Workplace Heroes.

The reception begins at 2 p.m. with a welcome from Cook. Harry Wright will emcee the event and will present awards. Katie Bottorff of the Red Cross will also present an award.

“Each year, we collect some amazing stories of the good part of the world and this year is no exception,” said Cook. “It is a true honor to be able to bring recognition to some great citizens of Fayette County and share their stories with the community.”
