A 28-year-old Washington C.H. man was killed in a two-vehicle accident Tuesday morning involving a semi-truck on U.S. Route 62 North near the intersection of West Road in northeast Fayette County.

At approximately 8:25 a.m. Tuesday, a 2013 Dodge Dart, driven by Travis A. Putney, was heading southbound on U.S. 62 Northeast and went left of center into the path of a northbound 2015 Freightliner semi-tractor trailer, driven by Andy Then, 33, of Reading, Pa.

According to Fayette County Sheriff Vernon Stanforth, the two vehicles collided head-on in the northbound lane and crashed into the guardrail along the west side of the roadway. The Dodge Dart was crushed on impact, and firefighters and emergency personnel extricated the body from the vehicle. Fayette County Coroner Dr. Dennis Mesker identified and pronounced Putney dead at the scene.

The driver of the semi, Then, was transported from the scene by Fayette County EMS to Fayette County Memorial Hospital for treatment of reported minor injuries, according to Stanforth. Both vehicles were towed from the scene.

Members of the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office Traffic Crash Reconstruction Unit were called to the scene and are conducting an investigation of the crash. Also assisting at the scene were members of the Sheriff’s Rescue Unit, Bloomingburg-Paint-Marion Fire Department, Tri-County Fire Department (Madison County), the Ohio Department of Transportation, and Barker’s Towing and Recovery Service.

U.S. 62 Northeast remained closed for several hours while crews worked to clear the wreckage and debris before reopening the roadway.
