The Ohio Society of CPAs is pleased to announce that Rep. Gary Scherer, CPA, R-Circleville, has been recognized with OSCPA’s Outstanding Legislator Award.

“Rep. Scherer, a CPA for over 30 years, is a longtime friend of OSCPA,” said Scott D. Wiley, CAE, president and CEO. “He’s had a significant and positive impact on Ohio’s tax climate since becoming a member of the Ohio House of Representatives three years ago. As a CPA, he understands our members’ perspective, and has been instrumental in developing and advocating for legislation that improves Ohio’s business climate.”

Rep. Scherer played a key role in OSCPA’s efforts to reform municipal income tax in Ohio, which culminated in the passage of House Bill 5 (130th GA) in December 2014. Using his extensive experience as a tax practitioner, Scherer infused common sense changes into the legislation.

As vice chairman of the House Ways & Means Committee, Rep. Scherer sponsored House Bill 19 (131st GA). The bill incorporated changes found in the federal Tax Increase Prevention Act of 2014 into Ohio income tax law to reduce complexity during the tax filing season and ensure taxpayers were able to use key federal tax credits and deductions.

Always looking to give back, Rep. Scherer also has personally engaged in OSCPA’s efforts to educate young CPAs about the importance of government involvement. Most recently, he spoke to a group of CPAs during OSCPA’s first Young CPA Day at the Statehouse. Learn more in this video.
