The annual Queen’s Tea was held Tuesday evening at the Mahan Building on the Fayette County Fairgrounds. Pitured here are the four 2015 Queen candidates (L to R): Alyssa Backenstoe, Taylor Kirkpatrick, Abbie Noble and Emily Daniels. The 2015 Fayette County Fair Queen will be announced during the opening ceremony on July 19 at 5:30 p.m.

The Fayette County Fair Queen is closer to being named after the candidates took part in the annual Queen’s Tea at the Mahan Building Tuesday evening.

The evening began with solo interviews between each individual candidate and the judge Donna Pitman, a past Warren County Fair Queen. The interview is done in private prior to the public event which began at 6 p.m. Junior Fairboard president Riley Evans introduced himself, coordinators, liaison Faith Cottrill, the judge and the Junior Fairboard Queen’s Tea committee members.

Hannah Peterson, the 2014 Fair Queen, then spoke to the candidates.

“Congratulations to each of you for taking the challenge to run for fair queen,” Peterson said. “You have all accomplished many great things through the junior fair. Being a fair queen and an attendant is a great honor, but at the end of the day it is really about what you have learned and the people you have met through your experience. Enjoy every moment of the fair, do something special, meet someone new, share your love for the fair and most of all make lots of memories.”

The candidates then took turns being introduced to the crowd. They began by pulling out a piece of paper, on which was a word, from a basket. The candidates were tasked with describing to the crowd what the word meant to them. Alyssa Backenstoe went first and pulled the word “learning,” Emily Daniels followed and pulled “value,” Abbie Noble was next, pulling the word “admire,” and Taylor Kirkpatrick finished the quartet with the word “reliable.”

“I think we had an excellent turnout with some very colorful decorations,” Queen’s Tea Coordinator, Lisa Schwartz said. “This is truly a fantastic group of girls and not one of them would be the wrong choice for queen. We are looking forward to the opening ceremony on July 19 when the queen will be announced.”

Following the ceremony, the mothers of the candidates received the decorative flowers courtesy of Patchwork Gardens that adorned the tables. The candidates received special engraved bags courtesy of Quali-Tee Design Sportswear. Both sponsors were thanked for their contribution.

The fair will begin on Monday, July 20 and will continue until Saturday, July 25. Additionally, the community is invited to join Fayette County 4-Hers for the opening ceremony at 5:30 p.m. on Sunday, July 19 at the McDonald’s Grandstand, where the queen will be announced.
