Nearly 100 people were in attendance for the 76th-annual Shepherds Club Banquet Saturday night to see 2015 Fayette County Lamb Queen Abbi Pettit crown Chloe Lambert as the 2016 Fayette County Lamb Queen.

Lambert is a junior at Miami Trace High School and shows lambs as her 4-H project. She is the daughter of Jeremy and Julie Lambert.

“Abbi did very well representing us last year and I know Chloe will do a fine job as well,” Fayette County Shepherds Club President Jeremy Etzler said. “We had some fabulous food and a good evening of fellowship. We were very fortunate to have Jim Percival that close to us, he lives just across the county line. He was able to give us a report from a national board.”

Percival, from Greene County and a member of the American Sheep Industry Board, encouraged sheep producers to use their new website, www.lambresourcecenter.com, to secure the latest information on sheep. Entertainment for the evening was provided by a quartet from Grace United Methodist Church under the direction of Jeannie Rosendahl. The quartet consisted of Marie Pickerill, Wendy Hawk, Chas Grover and Macrae Conrad.

Vice president, Travis Mick, introduced all current 4-H lamb project members in attendance and presided over the drawing of door prizes for the youth.

“We encourage the youth to participate and try to back them in both their projects and in terms of being resources for them,” Etzler said. “We also try to be financial supportive as well. We try to support through many avenues. We try to support the sale and the breeding projects as well. We support the class winners and the reserves from market projects. We also have a Shepherds Award that goes to outgoing seniors each year. The money can be chosen to further their education, or if they want to return to the farm, then they can choose to use that money to purchase sheep. We have done that now for 13 years.”

Etzler served as toastmaster. He introduced guests and thanked those present for promoting the local sheep industry and supporting the local youth with sheep projects. Christy Eckstein conducted the Queen Contest, which also included Macy Detty and Kasy Payton. Phil Grover gave the invocation and the Willow Restaurant served the delicious lamb dinner.

“The quartet was certainly refreshing entertainment that we have not had in recent years,” Etzler said. “For years we had different entertainment come in like that. We have not had something such as that for awhile and it was good to have them back. It looks like an exciting future here.”
