The Washington City Schools Board of Education met on Friday for a special meeting to discuss the employment of several employees.

The board discussed several items, including the employment of three individuals. Charles Rickman’s employment was approved as an attendant and Dave Fox was employed as an attendant and van driver, both effective March 1.

Additionally, Washington City Schools Superintendent Matthew McCorkle said Monday that the meeting was held to hire for a new position, the director of operations and safety. The district welcomes Mike Skaggs for that position, effective April 25.

“I had to hire a maintenance director and the board met to approve it on Friday,” McCorkle said. “This helped to speed up the time clock on this hiring, as the new person had to let his current job know he was leaving. He will be overseeing all of the schools in his position. We had a consultant that helped go through our applicants and helped the interview process move along. We all felt that with this position we wanted someone who had the experience and can handle the maintenance side of things as well as someone who can manage people. We are very excited to have Mike join the district and are lucky to get someone like him.”

The board also approved allowing the Washington High School girls softball team to participate in a fundraiser. Dubbed the “Strike Out Cancer Game,” the softball team will take on the Miami Trace High School girls softball team with proceeds from the game benefiting a Miami Trace player’s family members who are battling cancer. The game will be held on April 29 at 5 p.m. and will be held at the Miami Trace softball field.

“I have been friends of the family, Debbie and Eddie Napier, for years and they have supported the boosters for years,” Miami Trace softball head coach Terry Smith said during an interview Monday. “The girls are selling t-shirts that say Strike Out Cancer and come in blue for Washington Court House and black for Miami Trace. I also want to say thank you to the school boards for helping to approve this fundraiser. These two have been battling cancer for a little while and we want to help them out, even if it’s just in a small way. Cancer impacts so many people and if we could come together to help out a family who has done nothing but support our program, it would be just a great way to give back to them. We want to encourage the community to come join us.”

The Washington City Schools Board of Education will meet for its regularly scheduled meeting on April 25 at the District Office on Highland Avenue beginning at 7 p.m.
