An 18-year-old Fayette County man appeared in Washington Municipal Court Tuesday on a fourth-degree felony count of discharging a firearm from inside a vehicle.

Tyler R. Stewart was arrested Monday shortly after 11 p.m. following an incident that occurred in the 12000 block of Barger Road in southwest Fayette County. According to Sheriff Vernon Stanforth, his office received a call from a Barger Road resident alleging that someone had discharged a firearm at or near the vicinity of his residence.

The caller reportedly observed a vehicle in the area and followed the vehicle to the 8000 block of Sabina Road in Highland County, where the driver of the vehicle stopped voluntarily. Sheriff’s deputies and an officer from the Leesburg Police Department arrived at the scene and during the course of the investigation, identified the individuals inside a Dodge Dakota pickup truck.

Stanforth said further investigation led to the recovery of a shotgun from the inside of the vehicle and a handgun that was reportedly discarded along the roadside. The vehicle’s front seat passenger, identified as Stewart, was arrested.

Stewart was taken to the Fayette County Jail where he was charged with a felony count of improperly handling/discharging a firearm from a motor vehicle. He later posted bond and was released from jail.

On Tuesday in municipal court, Stewart asked for a court-appointed attorney. Judge Victor Pontious set a $2,500 cash/surety bond and placed Stewart under house arrest while the case is pending.
