SSCC to host education conference

The eighth-annual education conference, “Building Bridges,” will be held on Tuesday, Aug. 9-Friday, Aug. 12 at Southern State Com­munity College’s Central Campus, 100 Hobart Drive in Hillsboro.

The conference is sponsored by Southern State and COAD, and sessions are approved by the Ohio Department of Education, Ohio Department of Job and Family Services, and Step Up To Quality.

Cost is $30 per day, including continental breakfast, lunch, materials and prizes; howev­er, registration is required by Aug. 1. Morning sessions from 8:30-11:30am and afternoon sessions from 12:30-3:30pm.

The conference is for infant, toddler and preschool teachers, paraprofessionals, special education teachers, pre-k through third grade teachers, and other interested parties.

Workshops offered throughout the conference include:

• “FLIP IT-to Prevent Challenging Behavior” will be presented by Nicolle Moore of Child Focus, Inc.

• “Digging into Diversity” as well as “Power Struggles: How to Avoid Them and What to do When You are in Them” will also be presented by Nicolle Moore of Child Focus, Inc.

• “Infant & Toddler Best Practice Series: Understanding Infant/Toddler Temperament” will be presented by Amanda Atkins of COAD Early Care & Education, as well as “Infant & Toddler Best Practice Series: Supporting and Guiding Infant/Toddler Behavior.”

• “Project Wild” and “Project Learning Tree” will be presented by Barb Cook, Adjunct Faculty of Southern State Community College.

• “Music, Movement and More” will be presented by Becky Storer, Associate Professor of Southern State Community College.

• “Zones of Regulation” will be presented by Paula Armstrong of Region 14 SST/Hopewell Center.

• “Technology Tips for Educators” will be presented by Barb Cook of Southern State Community College and Nancy Johnson of Wilmington City Schools.

• “Family Engagement” will be presented by Becky Storer, Associate Professor of Southern State Community College.

• “Health Care Essentials for Paraprofessionals” will be presented by Jeannie Bell of Fayette County Health Dept.

• “Paraprofessionals in the Classroom: What is their Role?” will be presented by Kara Williams and Erica Leppert of Adams County Ohio Valley District.

Additional sessions will be offered on:

• “ELDS Language and Literacy-Part 1 & Part 2” (36 months to Kindergarten)

• “ELDS Cognition and General Knowledge: Social Studies-Part 1 & Part 2” (36 months to Kindergarten)
