Red Cross awards scholarships to WHS students

Washington High School sponsors multiple blood drives throughout the year. The Jobs for Ohio’s Graduates class, or JOGs, coordinate these blood drives with the assistance of the American Red Cross.

Students play an integral role in each blood drive, including not only their blood donation, but also in volunteering their time to do the marketing and registration components to make sure the blood drive is successful.

This year, the student leaders of the JOGs program were asked to hold four blood drives. This surpassed the previous years by two blood drives. The students accepted the challenge, and with assistance from Mr. Penwell’s marketing class, they were able to pull off the challenge.

Ninety-three Washington High School students donated 136 units of blood this year. The American Red Cross recognized this achievement by awarding three $250 scholarships to deserving students. This year’s recipients were chosen based on their example in volunteering and donating. This year’s recipients are Jazmin Baker, Elizabeth Jones, and Sarah Patterson.

The American Red Cross also recognizes high school leaders through the American Red Cross High School Leadership program. To be eligible, students must successfully donate three times, with one of those donations during a time of critical need. Critical need is defined as happening between Dec. 15 and Jan. 15, or over summer break. One student met the criteria for Washington High School, Sarah Patterson.

In lieu of donating during a time of critical need, students can satisfy the criteria by referring five new blood donors. Four students successfully met the criteria: Jazmin Baker, Alexis Gray, Cassy Hart, and Alyvia Kreps. For this accomplishment, each student was awarded an honorary Red Cord and a Red Cross lapel pin to be worn at graduation.
