Superheroes among us

MIAMI COUNTY — They are the heroes among us.

The Miami County Sheriff’s Office hosted its annual kids’ camp at the Redman’s Picnic Grounds on Wednesday. The theme this year was “Be A Superhero.”

More than 80 children attended the day of fellowship, food and fun with local officers and first responders.

Campers in third through sixth grades participated in all-day activities at the picnic grounds.

Miami County Sheriff’s Office School Resource Officer Ryan Karn said the camp is a great way to interact with children to remind them officers are people, too.

Karn has been a SRO for four years. He will be a full-time SRO at Newton Local Schools beginning this fall.

Karn said he has students come up to him in the school buildings because of the interaction through the camp.

“I’ve had kids come up to me and they’ve said how they are looking forward to the camp next year because of how much fun they’ve had with us,” Karn said. “I think if we start at this age and get something through to them at this age, I think it will make a difference by the time they get to high school.”

Campers played games, watched K-9 demonstrations, participated in team building exercises, as well as had the unique opportunity to explore various emergency vehicles.

“I think it’s great for the kids to see us in a different light and for us to interact with them, play games with them,” Karn shared Wednesday. “We are going to have lunch with them, officers off the road and sit down and eat with them.”

Each year, the sheriff’s office opens the free one-day camp to children who may never have the opportunity to attend a camp or who need an opportunity to interact with law enforcement.

The annual day camp is sponsored by Troy Meijer, Miami County FOP Lodge No. 58, Redmen Lodge, Troy Elks, Papa John’s Pizza, R.C. Hemm Glass Shops Inc., Paul Sherry Chrysler Dodge Inc., Con Agra Foods, Miami County Park District, Premier Health’s Koester Pavilion, Mr. Sew and Sews, Bradford Fire Department, Pleasant Hill Fire Department and Covington Fire Department.
