A Bloomingburg man was shot early Tuesday morning and Fayette County Sheriff’s Office detectives are attempting to identify the shooter and determine where the incident occurred.

The FCSO communications center received a transferred 911 call overnight from the Madison County Sheriff’s Office from a caller who said that her husband had called her to tell her he had been shot and was driving to their home at the Bloomingburg Mobile Home Park. The victim, identified as Michael W. McCullough, 33, reportedly arrived at the residence prior to the arrival of deputies and Fayette County EMS.

McCullough told investigators that while traveling from London back to Bloomingburg on State Route 38, he was shot in the abdomen by a passenger in his vehicle, according to Sheriff Vernon Stanforth. McCullough reportedly said he was familiar with the passenger but was unable to identify the individual by name.

Authorities said McCullough’s injuries were not life-threatening.

“McCullough indicated to deputies that during the return trip to Bloomingburg, he had stopped his vehicle along State Route 38 and was reportedly shot by the passenger at that time,” Stanforth said.

McCullough said that following the shooting, the passenger fled from the vehicle into a nearby field, according to Stanforth. Deputies checked the area of State Route 38 between Interstate 71 and the Village of Bloomingburg, but did not locate anyone on foot.

McCullough was transported from the mobile home park by EMS to the Fayette County Airport, where he was airlifted by MedFlight to a Columbus-area hospital for further treatment.

No other information was available as of press time. Sheriff’s detectives are continuing their investigation.
