Christmas organ tour coming to Greenfield

0

Each of Greenfield’s three historic pipe organs will be showcased in an inaugural Christmas special scheduled for Sunday, Dec. 11.

The Lyon and Healy organ in the First Presbyterian Church (1903), the Estey organ in the First United Methodist Church (1912) and the Skinner organ in the McClain High School auditorium (1915) will each be played by a current McClain student and alumni.

In addition, the Moon Chimes of the First Presbyterian Church and the Cockerill Bells of the First United Methodist Church will perform at each venue.

Ticket holders will be divided in half. Each half will begin the tour in one of the churches, then switch. After a 20 to 25 minute recital at each church, the halves will converge on the high school auditorium for the finale, which will include a community choir and a spirited sing-along for all, accompanied by the organ.

McClain is one of only seven high schools in the country boasting an in-house organ.

When the Estey organ was installed at the Methodist Church, Andrew Carnegie contributed $1,000 to the cause.

Tickets will be $5 and will go on sale in November.
