Following an overnight standoff with authorities at the Econo Lodge at the I-71/U.S. 35 intersection, a man wanted for murder in Hocking County attempted to take his own life this morning by shooting himself in the head.
According to Fayette County Sheriff Vernon Stanforth, Michael Napoli’s vehicle was spotted by an Econo Lodge housekeeper outside of the motel at around 11:30 p.m. Sunday. The FCSO was contacted and after evacuating the motel at around midnight, deputies set up a perimeter outside of Room 231, where Napoli was staying.
After attempting to negotiate with Napoli several times, “it became apparent we were going to have to go in,” said Stanforth.
At around 6 a.m., deputies used tear gas in an attempt to force Napoli to surrender. When he refused to come out, deputies tried to force entry into the room. According to Stanforth, Napoli had pushed mattresses up against the window and furniture against the door.
“We had to literally break the door off of its hinges to gain entry,” said Stanforth.
When deputies gained entry, Napoli was sitting in a chair and had already shot himself in the head. He was taken to Miami Valley Hospital for treatment. He was considered in life-threatening condition.
The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation is currently processing the scene at the Econo Lodge.
Napoli is suspected of shooting a woman and killing a man inside of a cabin Saturday night at the Wildwoods Backwood Retreats Cabins on State Route 678 in Hocking County.
