Where is the God of Elijah?

A. Milton Smith proposed this question to his worldwide listening audience on The Showers of Blessings radio program.

This was Elisha’s question following the death of the prophet Elijah. It is the question that inquiring minds desperately want to know even today.

“Where is the Lord God of Elijah?” This question is being repeated by people of faith and those of no faith. The question implies, “Where is the God that does things?” The answer includes several things.

THE GOD OF ELIJAH IS REAL. The Triune God, Father, Son, and Holy Ghost, reveals His awesome wonders and power through the rainbows of His promises. Elijah knew God in a personal, intimate relationship. God was actual and real in his experience. His life had become dynamic through the divine energy of the living God. We are interested in Elijah and his God because there was more to it than just form and ceremony.

The reality of God in his life is the point that grips us. If we want God, we want him in a real sense; we want him as others have known him.

THE GOD OF ELIJAH ANSWERED PRAYER FOR ELIJAH. We want to know the God who answers prayer. He closed the heavens, and then he sent the rain in answer to prayer. Showers of blessings are always needed. If, when we pray, the refreshing showers of spiritual benedictions fall upon on our souls, then we are glad. We want the God who sends such blessings to our needy world. There are thousands of needs among us which call for a God who answers prayer.

THE GOD OF ELIJAH RECEIVED STRENGTH FROM GOD. He lived in a dark day both in religion and in government. False worship was accepted as the state religion, and the prophets of God were greatly persecuted. Wickedness of all kinds was rampant then, the same as it is now. The God that enabled Elijah to be faithful in the midst of all kinds of sin and give him strength in the time of danger is worth knowing.

THE GOD OF ELIJAH RECEIVED COMFORT FROM GOD. We are interested in the God of Elijah because he was a comfort to the prophet in times of weakness and discouragement. Elijah was not always on the mountain-top. He often lost courage. While standing at the mouth of a cave watching the fire burn and listening to the howling winds, the still small voice of God spoke to him. How comforting it must have been to hear that assuring voice. We all need to be lifted out of discouragement at times. It is heartening to know that He understands and that He still speaks words of comfort to our troubled hearts.

THE GOD OF ELIJAH REMOVED THE DIFFICULTIES IN ELIJAH’S LIFE that he was unable to handle. The heavens closed, and they opened, the barrel of meal wasted not, neither did the curse of oil fail, the dead son was raised to life, and the rivers of Jordan divided, all through the power of God. We are interested in a God that is able to open closed prison doors, shake down walls, snap the bands and set men free.

WHERE IS THE LORD GOD OF ELIJAH NOW? The theological answer is, He is OMNIPRESENT; He is everywhere 24/7. He is not dead, neither is he on a journey, nor is he asleep as the prophets of Baal suggested. He still lives and watches over His own.

Where is God? God is still on His throne and shall be there forever.

Where is God? He is in His Holy Sanctuary and fills it with His presence.

Where is God? Isaiah spoke of Him as “He that sitteth upon the circle of the earth.”

Where is God? He still watches over His own.

Page two; Where Is the God of Elijah?

Where is God? The Lord is nigh them of a broken heart; and saveth them that are of a contrite spirit.

Where is God? His presence is in the hospitals. He comforts those who are suffering and dying.

Where is God? He is where two or three are gathered together in His name.

Where is God? Standing at the hearts door of everyone who is willing to open it and receive Him.

Where is God? He is near those of a broken and contrite heart.

Where is God? He is in you the hope of glory.

THE GOD OF ELIJAH STILL LIVES and He is right where He has always been. Let no one feel that He has lost control of the universe. He is still on His throne and He is still interested in needy humanity. Let us have faith in Him, and trust Him for all that we need. Love Him passionately. He wants to be real and satisfying to our hungry souls. He is the same yesterday, today and forever.
