Getting Ahead: Connecting to the power source

0

Growing up, I learned that there is a source that provides power to everything we use. For instance, to mow the lawn I had to put gasoline in the lawn mower. If I ran out of gasoline I had to stop, go get the gas can, and pour it into the mower. The same thing was true of our tractors, hay elevators, cars and trucks. You had to put gasoline in them before any work could be accomplished.

We had other things that worked on electricity and the same was true of them. There was a source needed to make them work. If there was no connection to the electricity, the tool, appliance or light would not work. I found this out while trimming my shrubs recently. I was not paying close enough attention and hit the cord with the hedge trimmer. It instantly cut the extension cord and immediately the trimmer shut down.

I also found out that there was another element necessary to complete the process. Even though I did not have the ability to make the gasoline or electricity, I had to be involved in the equation. The mower, tractor, cars or trucks could not put gasoline in themselves. The tools or appliances could not plug themselves into the electric supply. I had to pull on the rope to start the mower, put the key in the ignition to start the tractor and flip the switch to turn on the lights. For the power source to accomplish its purpose, I had to do something.

Are we like a machine in that we need a power source to work out our life? And even if there is such a power source, how do we get connected to it? Is there someone or something else needed to provide that connection?

These and other life questions will be addressed Sunday morning as “The Gathering Place Family” meets in the Washington High School gymnasium at 10 a.m. for our Pre-Service Connection where we enjoy coffee, juice and donuts. Our Worship Service and Children’s Church then begins at 10:30 a.m.

Come at 7 p.m. and be part of our Wednesday night Bible Study and Children’s Ministry on the third floor above Trends at 120 W. Court St. in Washington C.H.
