Blue Lion baseball sweeps pair

On Saturday, April 1, the Washington varsity baseball team hosted a tri-match with the Circleville Tigers and the Landmark Christian Eagles (from Cincinnati).

The games were originally slated to be played in Circleville, but field conditions were such that the trio of games were moved to Washington High School.

In the first game, Washington defeated Circleville, 11-1 in six innings.

In the second contest, Circleville beat Landmark Christian, 3-2.

In the final game of the day, the Blue Lions beat the Eagles, 6-1.

Against the Tigers, senior Jarett Patton was the winning pitcher for Washington.

He worked five innings with five hits and one run (earned). He walked three and struck out three.

Junior Kenny Arboleda pitched the sixth inning, allowing just one hit.

Barnhart was tagged with the loss for the Tigers.

He pitched 2.1 innings, yielding eight runs (seven earned) on seven hits. He walked four and struck out one.

Burns pitched three innings for Circleville. He gave up three runs (one earned) on three hits. He walked three and struck out three.

Washington had 10 hits in the game and committed no errors.

Sophomore Tyler Rood went 2 for 4 for the Blue Lions, with a double, one run scored and four driven in.

Senior Conner Chrisman was 2 for 4 with two runs scored.

“This was a big game for us coming off a loss to Clinton-Massie where we didn’t play well,” Washington head coach Tyler Rhodus said. “Circleville is a good team, and my guys came out on a cold Saturday morning with energy and focus.

“We hit the ball pretty well and were able to score early, setting the tone for the day,” Rhodus said. “Jarett pitched better as the game went on and earned the win.”

In the third game of the day, Washington defeated Landmark Christian, 6-1.

Junior Austin Joseph pitched a complete game, two-hitter to earn the win for the Blue Lions. He allowed one unearned run, walked one and struck out four.

Fillippi started and took the loss for Landmark Christian. He pitched one inning with three hits and four runs (two earned). He struck out one and did not walk a batter.

Rice pitched two innings with two hits, two runs (both unearned) with two walks and one strikeout.

Caldwell pitched three innings with four hits, no runs, one walk and one strikeout.

An unnamed player pitched a scoreless seventh inning for the Eagles.

Leading hitters for Washington included Conner Chrisman, going 2 for 3 with a triple, one RBI and one run.

Brian Wilson was 2 for 3 with one run and one RBI and Ethan Marting was 2 for 3 with one run and one RBI.

Senior Griffin Shaw went 1 for 4 with one run scored and one RBI.

The Blue Lions scored all the runs they would need with four in the top of the fourth.

“Doubleheaders are hard because it’s tough to focus and have energy for both games,” Washington head coach Tyler Rhodus said. “I thought my guys did a good job of focusing in for the game after watching Circleville play Landmark Christian.

“Austin Joseph pitched a great game, giving up only two hits,” Rhodus said. “Austin did a great job of pounding the strike zone, making the other team hit his pitch. It was a nice way to string together a couple wins.”
