The Washington Lady Blue Lion soccer team hosted the Lady Panthers of Miami Trace for an SCOL match Tuesday, Sept. 15.

Washington won a hard-fought match, 1-0.

“I thought our girls put in an extremely good effort in the second half,” Miami Trace head coach Caitlin Zook said. “I think we controlled the game a lot more. We just didn’t have a shot fall.

“We were kind of unlucky in the first half,” Zook said. “They had a direct kick. It was a very good shot.”

Washington scored on a direct kick by senior Ashley Rose for the only goal of the match. It came at the 25-minute mark of the first half.

“We look forward to playing them again,” Zook said. The rematch is set for Thursday, Oct. 8 at 5 p.m. at Miami Trace High School.

Taylor Barrett was the goal-keeper for Miami Trace. She had 11 saves.

Miami Trace took 17 shots on goal.

Washington had 16 shots on goal.

“I think we had the ball, offensively, for most of the first half,” Washington head coach Tyler Rhodus said. “Miami Trace did a good job defensively. We really couldn’t get a good shot on goal. We had some, but nothing great.

“In the second half, we came out a little bit flat,” Rhodus said. “Miami Trace had possession of the ball more than we did. They had some good shots on goal. We got into position enough to keep them off balance. Taylor (Smith, Washington’s keeper) came up huge with a couple of good saves, especially there at the end with about a minute and a half left. That was her first career shutout. She’s just a freshman and she had never played soccer before.”

Smith was credited with eight saves for Washington.

“This is a big game, an emotional game,” Rhodus said. “It’s fun for the girls. I thought both teams battled really, really hard. I’m excited for when we go out to Trace. That’s going to be a good game out there, too.”

Miami Trace had 10 corner kicks to none for Washington.

Miami Trace (1-8 overall) is at Chillicothe Thursday night at 5 p.m.

Washington (2-5 overall) hosts Clinton-Massie Thursday at 5 p.m.
