The Miami Trace Panthers began the week with a return to SCOL action, hosting the Cavaliers of Chillicothe High School Tuesday night.

Chillicothe won the game, 56-47.

Junior Seth Barnes was the game’s leading scorer for Chillicothe with 20 points.

Sophomore Brandon Maughmer reached double figures for the Cavs with 13 points.

A trio of players, juniors Blake Pittser, DeAndre Pettiford and Tyrae Pettiford, each scored 10 points.

Sophomore Darby Tyree added eight points.

The Cavaliers took a 17-10 first quarter lead.

At the halftime break, the Cavs led the Panthers, 29-21.

Miami Trace outscored Chillicothe in the third quarter, 12-11 to trail 40-33 heading in the fourth quarter.

Chillicothe took the final quarter by two points, 16-14, on the way to the 56-47 victory.

“I thought our guys hung in there,” Chillicothe head coach Eric Huffer said. “Transition defense was key; making sure we controlled the boards and not let them get offensive rebounds. I thought for the most part we handled their pressure.

“The first quarter was kind of sloppy,” Huffer said. “We’d make one, two passes and chuck up a shot. We were able to get easy transition. We want to play fast.

“I thought we did much better in the second half of kind of controlling the tempo,” Huffer said. “I think we missed eight or nine layups, too.”

“We definitely had a slow start,” Miami Trace head coach Rob Pittser said. “We dug ourselves a hole. We climbed out of it and immediately jumped back in the hole.

“We’re having trouble putting stretches of consistent play together so we can hang in the game,” Pittser said. “We’re having way too many peaks and valleys. We have two and three-year varsity players making fundamental mistakes. We’re going to keep searching and try to figure out a way.”

Miami Trace (now 2-4 overall, 2-2 in the SCOL) will host the McClain Tigers Friday with the freshman game starting at 4:45 p.m.

McClain defeated East Clinton in SCOL action Tuesday, 60-57.

Elsewhere around the SCOL, Washington defeated Hillsboro, 60-55 and Wilmington pummeled Clinton-Massie, 101-27.
