It was a match-up of blue and white Lady Lions (Washington) versus red and white Lady Lions (Fairfield) on Friday, Dec. 18 at Washington High School.

Fairfield (from Leesburg) won the game, 43-40.

Washington took a 10-7 lead at the end of the first quarter.

By the half, Washington led, 22-20.

The game stayed close in the second half with Washington holding a 30-29 lead.

Fairfield outscored Washington 14-10 in the fourth quarter to take the 43-40 win.

Freshman Hannah Haithcock led Washington with 18 points.

Senior Alexis Gray was next with eight points.

Grace Shope was the game’s leading scorer for Fairfield, pouring in 25 points.

Macey Pauley was next with seven points.

Fairfield won the game despite making just 4 of 17 shots from the free throw line for 23 percent.

“It was our worst game of the year, energy-wise,” Washington head coach John Persinger said. “We came out really, really flat. We had a game plan for No. 5 (Shope), but, it seemed like we couldn’t find her.

“We were stagnant on defense,” Persinger said. “We tried different things, but nothing worked.

“We only got to the free throw line four times,” Persinger said. “That’s usually one of our strong points, driving and getting fouled and getting to the line. We just didn’t have any energy.”

Washington (now 4-6 overall) is back at home tonight against Huntington of the Scioto Valley Conference. The j-v game starts at 5:30 p.m.
