Successful season opener

The Washington Lady Blue Lions tennis team began the 2016 season with a home match against Circleville Monday, Aug. 15 at Gardner Park.

Washington won the match, 3-0.

Two of the courts were rained out.

At first singles, Washington sophomore Megan Downing won her match, 6-1, 6-0.

Freshman Sydnie Hall won at third singles, 6-1, 6-0.

At second singles, Washington senior Anna Nestor’s match was tied, 5-7, 6-0. Rains cancelled out the third set.

In doubles, senior Sierra Dawson and junior Maria Pickerill won the first doubles court, 6-0, 6-0.

Senior Gretchen Milstead and junior Mackenzie Cress won their first set, 6-3 and were leading 3-1 in the second set when that second doubles match was halted.

Washington also won two j-v matches.

Freshman Brynne Frederick won, 8-2 and sophomore Jen Richards and freshman Beth Wilt won, 8-0.

Weather permitting, Washington will open SCOL play with a match against Clinton-Massie at home Wednesday at 4:30 p.m.

Chillicothe comes to town Thursday for a 4:30 p.m. match.
