Lady Lions shut out in season opener

The Washington Lady Lion soccer team braved the rainy conditions to take on the London Lady Red Raiders in their season-opening contest Thursday, Aug. 17 at home.

The score remained tied with neither team threatening to score until London drew first blood with 32:55 remaining in the first half on a low roller that got through the legs of the Washington goalkeeper.

Just a couple minutes later, a London player struck one into the back left corner of the net for a quick 2-0 advantage.

The next 15 minutes saw London possess the ball in Washington territory for most of the time before adding two more goals to gain a 4-0 lead which was the halftime score.

London would tack on a fifth goal at the 32:22 mark of the second half.

The Lady Lion defense held tough over the next 25 minutes while recording multiple shots on goal that were unsuccessful.

The final goal of the evening came from near midfield as a London player drilled one in to the top of the net, giving the the Lady Red Raiders a 6-0 lead and ultimately a shutout victory.

Unofficially, Washington goalkeeper Calee Ellars had five saves in goal in the first half and Avah Ruggles had six in the second half. Destany Snyder and Jordyn Gray each recorded two shots on goal for the Lady Lions.

Washington (0-1) is back in action on Thursday, Aug. 24 at Westfall at 5 p.m.
