The American Legion Riders held their fourth-annual Brett Wightman Memorial Ride from the American Legion Post #25, 1240 Clinton Ave., Saturday to White Oak Grove Cemetery on Greenfield-Sabina Road.

The ride kicked off at noon after viewing the Eyes of Freedom display at the legion. Tracy Nichols, president of the Riders, heads up this annual tribute. Dozens of motorcycle riders set off on their route through Sabina and other areas and ended at 1:45 p.m at the cemetery for a tribute to a fallen soldier.

William “Brett” Wightman was the son of Keith and Kim Wightman, of Washington Court House. He was 22-years-old when he was killed in Iraq in 2005, a member of Lima Company, 3rd Battalion, 25th Regiment.

Brett Wightman is depicted on one of the Eyes of Freedom paintings and has been remembered by the American Legion through a motorcycle tribute and ceremony at the cemetery.

The Concord-Green Fire Department provided fire engine assistance to block the route on US 62 and on Greenfield-Sabina Road as the riders approached the cemetery.

The Jefferson Township Fire Department ladder engine flew the American flag high above the entrance to the cemetery for all riders to pass under as they approached the gravesite.

The riders lined up to give tribute to the Wightman family at the gravesite prior to the ceremony.

The ceremony consisted of the Clinton County Honor Guard 21-gun salute, a bagpiper playing ceremonial tunes, and a flag was folded and presented to Gold Star family Keith and Kim Wightman from the Honor Guard.

This tribute is a reminder of the great sacrifice, love and devotion, and the ultimate price men and women are willing to pay for their country.
