The Miami Trace High School varsity volleyball team opened the 2024 season in dramatic style with a come-from-behind victory over visiting Madison Plains Saturday, Aug. 17.

Miami Trace dropped the first two sets, but turned things around for a 3-2 victory over the Golden Eagles.

The score of the match was 25-27, 20-25, 25-20, 25-23 and 15-5.

“We made a couple of adjustments there in the third set,” Miami Trace head coach Doug Mace said. “We were able to come back on them and pull out the win.

“Madison Plains has been a good team over the last several years,” Mace said. “We knew it would be a tough match.”

Mace went on to say that Miami Trace’s regular setter was not available, due to an injury.

“We used Sydney Carter, who is normally our libero,” Mace said. “We had her doing the setting for us. It changed the dynamics a little bit and it took us a little bit of time to get coordinated. We were definitely out of sorts in the first two sets.

“Then we kind of pulled it together and did enough to win,” Mace said. “I wouldn’t say it was one of our finer moments. We did enough to win.”

Addyson Butts led Miami Trace with 16 kills. She also had two ace serves.

Lauren Farrens had eight kills and four blocked shots.

“Hopefully we’ll have some practices this week and smooth out some of those bumps,” Mace said. “And hopefully, we’ll be a little better off going into Saturday’s match.”

In the j-v match Saturday, Madison Plains won, 25-15, 24-26, 28-26.

Miami Trace plays at Clinton-Massie Saturday with the freshman match at 10 a.m., followed by junior-varsity and then varsity.

Miami Trace opens defense of its two consecutive Frontier Athletic Conference titles with a match at Jackson on Tuesday, Aug. 27 and a home match against Chillicothe on Aug. 29.
