WAVERLY — The 2024 soccer season kicked off for the Washington Lady Lions on Tuesday, Aug. 20 as they traveled to take on the Waverly Lady Tigers.

A season ago, Washington hosted Waverly and took a tough loss, 1-0. The Lady Lions sought revenge on Tuesday and returned the favor to the Lady Tigers, coming back to Fayette County with a 2-1 victory.

After spending much of her first two seasons in goal for Washington, junior Calee Ellars was on the offensive attack during the game and scored both of the goals for her team.

Statistically for the Lady Lions, Ellars scored two goals on three shots on goal. junior Jordyn Gray had four shots on goal. Gray scored a goal during the contest but the goal was overturned as a violation was called on Washington during the sequence.

Freshman Addison Krape and junior Jannyah Villalobos Burns each had a shot on goal during the game.

In goal, freshman Eydyn Gibbs made her varsity debut and had six saves on seven shots at goal.

Washington (1-0) will have their home-opener on Saturday, Aug. 24 when they host Madison Plains at 11 a.m. Last season, the Lady Lions traveled to Madison Plains and came home with a 5-0 victory.
