Growing beyond the classroom

When given the opportunity to expand their knowledge beyond the classroom, members of the Miami Trace Great Oaks FFA Chapter jumped at the chance to grow their knowledge during the 2024 Southwest Ohio Corn Growers and Fayette Agronomy Field Day held on Aug. 13.

Lily Waddle, the Chapter’s Building Communities officer and four-year member of the Miami Trace Agronomy Career Development Event (CDE) team, reached out to Ken Ford, agriculture and natural resources educator with the Ohio State University (OSU) Extension, Fayette County, to volunteer the chapter’s assistance to this event.

Putting on a public event involved many hands and the Miami Trace Great Oaks officers were glad to be of assistance. Prior to the event, the FFA officers helped sweep floors, set up tents, displayed signs, and arranged tables. On the day of the event, 10 members were present to aid the event in running smoothly and helping educate guests about agriculture. Throughout the day, they practiced their public speaking skills by introducing session speakers and sharing their insight at their tabletop booth display. Additionally, members demonstrated their talents by taking pictures and capturing videos throughout the field day to capture highlights for the Extension Office to be used on their social media and other promotional materials.

In an effort to showcase much of what the program has to offer, the Miami Trace Great Oaks FFA Chapter set up a booth with a slideshow of pictures from the past year that included student Supervised Agricultural Experiences (SAE) projects, Career Development Event (CDE) preparation and participation, service learning projects, classroom skills demonstrations, and other activities members are involved in. While manning the booth, members were able to network with community members to speak about activities the Chapter is involved in, how members have showcased their talents, and the opportunities captured by support of local community members, agribusinesses, and school faculty and administration.

Members were also able to build relationships by networking with various equipment dealers, seed salesmen, and agricultural community members. The Miami Trace Great Oaks FFA Chapter would like to thank the OSU Extension Fayette County office, Southwest Ohio Corn Growers, and Fayette Agronomy programs for the opportunity to be involved in this event.
