Panthers beat Falcons, 3-1; top Waverly, 8-1

The Miami Trace Panthers boys soccer team welcomed the team from Clinton-Massie High School for a non-conference match with the Falcons Tuesday, Sept. 3.

Miami Trace posted a 3-1 victory, improving its record to 3-3-1.

The Panthers scored the only goal of the first half.

With 16 minutes to play in the half, Ian Mavis delivered a nice pass to Ian Rayburn who scored.

The Falcons tied the match on a penalty kick with 22:09 to play.

Landon Burns converted a penalty kick for Miami Trace to put the Panthers back on top, 2-1 with 12:28 to go in the game.

Mavis gave the Panthers a bit of breathing room and made it 3-1 with a goal coming at the 5:06 mark of the second half.

Clinton-Massie missed a penalty kick in the first half.

Miami Trace had four shots on goal to six for Clinton-Massie.

Miami Trace senior goalie Avery Bennett was credited with two saves.

The Falcons came into the game in first place in the Southern Buckeye Athletic and Academic Conference.

Clinton-Massie is now 4-2 after the loss.

“I think we all played really well,” Miami Trace junior Sinjin Smith said. “Passing the ball, possession, finding people. Even the younger guys, finding people, doing good with the ball. That’s how we won the game, being a good team.”

Panthers beat Waverly Tigers, 8-1

On Saturday, Aug. 31, the Panthers hosted Waverly and won that match, 8-1.

Ian Rayburn scored the first goal for the Panthers with the assist to Sinjin Smith.

Rayburn scored again late in the half with the assist from Landon Burns.

Miami Trace led 2-0 at the half.

“We talked about a lot of things (during the break),” Miami Trace head coach Josh Thoroman said. “Once again, lots of credit to coach (Aaron) Teter, coach (Joe) Flach and coach (Matt) Esker for preparing the boys with a good halftime talk.

“We came out (in the second half) and scored six goals in 15 minutes,” Thoroman said.
