WASHINGTON COURT HOUSE, Ohio — A fire at 1140 Nelson Place damaged a garage and attic space on Monday at about 11:20 a.m.

The fire report states that light-gray smoke was seen coming from the corner of the garage, and Washington Fire Department personnel found an individual using a garden hose to try to extinguish the front exterior corner of the building. Smoke was seen from the gable vent and roof vent. Smoke was found in the attic, but there was no visible fire. There were moderate smoke conditions in the living area of the house.

Firefighters ventilated all areas of concern and the report listed the loss at $5,000.

The investigation confirmed the fire originated on the exterior at/near a pine tree next to the house as a result of a family member burning weeds with a propane gas torch. The fire spread to the exterior wall, soffit area above the garage and into the attic area above the garage.
