Received station tone from the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office reporting smoke coming out of the dryer, no active fire. FD did not find any visible smoke or fire and noted the occupant outside at the time of arrival. FD confirmed everyone was out and accounted for, completed a walk around of the structure and found light to moderate smoke conditions at the time of making entry. FD did not find any visible fire in or near the dryer, disconnected the power supply and removed the dryer unit from the residence. FD established positive pressure ventilation, and its’ investigation found a scorch mark on the dryers’ vent tube which aligned with a melted spot in an electrical wire directly behind and against the vent tube. FD isolated the circuit in question by shutting off the breaker.

Further investigation found arcing / scorch marks along a five (5) foot length both inside and outside of the vent tubing. Additional evidence of burnt lint was found inside both the vent tubing and the dryer unit. FD was unable to determine if the cause was the result of inclement weather (lightning strikes) at the time of the incident or the mechanical failure of either the electrical system or the dryer unit.
