Lady Lions fall to Wilmington in straight sets to begin season

The 2024 volleyball campaign kicked off for Washington on Saturday as the Lady Lions hosted Wilmington for freshman, j-v and varsity competition.

Wilmington defeated Washington at all three levels on the day.

The Lady Hurricane won in straight sets at the freshman level, 25-19 and 25-14.

They won the first set of the j-v match, 25-23, Washington won set two 25-19, and Wilmington won the third and final set 25-18.

In the varsity contest, Wilmington won in straight sets: 25-20, 25-20 and 25-18 to secure the sweep.

Statistically for Washington, senior Maggi Wall led in aces with five, followed by senior Jarika Mick with three, junior Ava Hines with two and senior Aysha Haney and senior Scotti Quigley each with one.

In kills, Quigley and Mick each had three, Hines, junior Peyton Hughes and junior Maggie Pfeifer each had two and Wall and freshman Anna Tackage each had one.

Haney led with eight set assists, followed by Tackage with two.

Hughes led in blocks with two solo.

Wall led in digs with nine, followed by Mick with eight, Pfeifer with six, junior Alora Self with five, Quigley with three, junior Chinatsu Obayashi with two and Haney with one.

Washington (0-1) is back in action on Tuesday at home against Huntington beginning with a j-v contest.
