July 15 – 2351 Kenskill Ave.

Received station tone from the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office reporting a commercial compactor on fire. While en-route, FD requested station 600 to be put on standby for an engine and manpower. Prior to arrival, FD was notified via radio by dispatch that unit 161 was on the scene and advised the fire was not inside the facility and appeared to be contained to the compactor on the exterior. FD found heavy black smoke coming from the compactors’ hopper and no apparent evacuation at the time of arrival. FD defensively positioned the apparatus to initiate an attack, established a secure water supply and completed a 360 degree visual of the compactor revealing it was independent / separate from the structure. FD confirmed the fire had not breached the metal exterior siding of the facility and began extinguishing the fire. Facility staff were able to separate the hopper and the dumpster with the use of a tow-motor to allow FD personnel to ensure the fire was extinguished. FD investigation places the origin of the fire at / near the front-left corner of the hopper, but was not able to determine a cause.
