It was a special evening of volleyball at Washington High School Tuesday, Sept. 17.

Not only was it the first of two meetings on the court between the two Fayette County schools, but there were some special recognitions, as well.

Washington High School’s first volleyball team, the program being established in the fall of 1974, celebrated its 50th anniversary.

In addition, the 1999 team that won a Regional championship and qualified to the State tournament, was recognized.

That team was coached by Doug Mace, who is currently in his 10th season as head coach of the Miami Trace program.

A large crowd turned out for the occassion.

While the two school’s middle school teams were battling on the other side of the campus, the Washington and Miami Trace freshman, junior-varsity and varsity teams played at the high school.

Miami Trace continued to defend its back-to-back Frontier Athletic Conference titles with a three-set win over Washington.

Scores of the varsity sets were: 25-8, 25-16 and 25-13.

Miami Trace won the j-v match, 25-14 and 25-9 and the Panthers began the evening by winning the freshman match, 25-6 and 25-11.

Miami Trace’s varsity team is now 11-0 overall, 5-0 in the conference with a home match against FAC opponent Jackson Thursday.

Washington (2-11 overall, 0-5 in the FAC) will begin the second round of conference play by hosting the Lady Tigers of McClain Thursday.

Miami Trace is scheduled to play Jackson’s j-v team at 5 p.m. and varsity at approximately 6 p.m.

Washington has three matches scheduled against McClain with the freshman match slated for 5 p.m. with j-v and then varsity to follow.
