What’s happening at Carnegie Library?

Every September, Carnegie Public Library joins libraries, publishers, authors, and educators to celebrate Banned Books Week! Banned Books Week is an annual event that highlights attempts to censor books in schools and libraries. It brings together the book community to support the freedom to express and seek ideas. The theme for Banned Books Week 2024 is “Freed Between the Lines,” encouraging all readers to exercise their right to read freely. Community members, educators, parents, and students are encouraged to stop in and take a look at our challenged and banned books display! All the books on this display have been challenged or banned from a school or library in the United States.

For children and families: Join us for storytime! Preschool aged children and their siblings are invited to “Bonnie’s Books” in Jeffersonville on Tuesdays at 11 a.m. Children will listen to a story, make a craft, play, and socialize. This program is held at Jeffersonville United Methodist Church. Then, each Thursday at 10:30 a.m., in the library meeting room, Miss Raina leads “Little Wigglers” storytime. This storytime is for our youngest patrons and includes music, rhyming, and reading and is designed for babies and toddlers ages birth to 3. And, on Fridays at 10:30 a.m., Mr. Aaron hosts Hello, Friends! This preschool storytime includes books, music, games, and more. For preschoolers ages 3 and up.

Also for children: Sew Happy! Learn to sew in this eight-week course, for ages 8-12. Children will learn to use a sewing machine, make simple projects such as a potholder, a pillowcase, and a tote bag. Materials will be provided. You can also purchase your own fabric depending on the projects. Registration is required. Since this is a continuing course, please commit to most/all the classes when you sign up. This class began on Tuesday, Sept. 24, and runs through Nov. 12, and takes place every Tuesday from 4:30 p.m. until 6 p.m.

Homeschool Library Day takes place each Wednesday at 1 p.m. Meet each week for a different activity! This week, we will be doing yoga.

Coming up for adults: on Saturday, Oct. 5 at 11 a.m. is Crafternoon! Bring your own craft project to work on while mingling with other local crafters. Our Bring Your Own Book Club group meets on Saturday, Oct. 12 at 11 a.m. This is a book club with a twist, readers are invited to discuss books, old and new, and share recommendations. Unlike most book clubs where everyone reads the same thing, at BYOB you pick the titles you want to read.

Coming up: the library will be closed on Friday, Oct. 11 for a staff in-service day. We will also be closed on Monday, Oct. 14 for Columbus Day.

All programs are free unless otherwise noted. Some programs require registration. For details about the reading challenge or any of the fun programs, please visit us at the library or give us a call at 740-335-2540. Calendars and information are also available online at cplwcho.org and on Facebook and Instagram @cplwcho.
