The Miami Trace High School volleyball team hosted the team from Logan Elm High School for a non-conference match Monday, Sept. 30.

Miami Trace won the varsity match in straight sets: 25-19, 25-16 and 25-17.

The first set was very closely-contested, until the latter stages.

The score was tied nine times with Logan Elm leading 17-16. After that, Miami Trace outscored the visitors, 9-2.

Logan Elm led early in the second set, 4-0 before Miami Trace tied the score, 5-5.

The Panthers took the lead, with Logan Elm achieving a momentary tie, 8-8. The remainder of the set went to Miami Trace, 17-8.

The set ended on a kill by Addyson Butts.

The third set was tied briefly, 4-4.

Miami Trace went into the lead and held on the rest of the way. Logan Elm did pull within one point at 15-14, but the set was tied just the one time.

“We were a little hesitant tonight,” Miami Trace head coach Doug Mace said. “We had Homecoming and everything else going on and we hadn’t been in the gym in a few days.

“If we could control the ball on the first pass, we were able to get (the ball to) our setter and our hitters were able to score points,” Mace said. “It came down to us just being able to control the ball.”

Logan Elm was without a player — Claire King — whom Mace called, “Their No. 1 player.

“Last year we played them twice and both matches went five (sets),” Mace said. “If she had been playing tonight, it might have gone five again. She’s their version of Addyson. She’s really a good kid and a good player.

“We did a really good job of serving tonight, also,” Mace said. “Serving was what gave us some space and gave us a few points cushion there every once in a while. That was what probably helped us out the most tonight.”

Sydney Carter led Miami Trace in digs with 11. Cecilia Robinson had nine, Kylie Yeazel had nine, Lauren Farrens had seven, Ellie Robinette had five, Addyson Butts had two.

Ace serves for Miami Trace: Yeazel, 6; Robinette, 3; Robinson, 2; Farrens, 1; Butts, 1.

Logan Elm won the j-v match, 25-20 and 25-14.
