Miami Trace tennis competes in Sectional; MT duo qualifies to District

HILLSBORO — The Miami Trace High School tennis team began a match at Hillsboro on Sept. 25.

The match was suspended due to rain and was resumed to its conclusion on Sept. 30.

Miami Trace won this match, three courts to two.

On Sept. 25, Miami Trace’s Lucia Wilson lost at first singles, 0-6, 0-6.

Emma Hagler won by forfeit at third singles.

Lily Waddle and Abbie Steele won at second doubles, 6-0, 6-3.

Upon their return to Hillsboro on Sept. 30, Ava Shull lost at second singles, 1-6, 1-6 and Kielyn Daughtery and Takyia Yahn won at first doubles, 4-6, 7-6 (7), 6-4.

Miami Trace finished 3-5 in the FAC this season. (McClain does not have a tennis program.)

In the Sectional tournament, Emma Hagler lost 3-6, 0-6 to Marietta.

Lynnie King lost to Marietta, 0-6, 0-6.

Lucia Wilson had a first-round bye and lost in the second round to Wheelersburg, 0-6, 3-6.

Kielyn Daughtery and Ava Shull won their first match at the Sectional in doubles, defeating Hillsboro, 6-1, 6-0.

Daugherty and Shull played a duo from Athens in the second round. They lost the first set 2-6 and came back to win the second set 6-3.

They were down 3-4 in the third set and responded by winning the final three games of the match and winning the set 6-4.

Kielyn and Ava qualified for the second day of Sectionals and Districts in Athens on Wednesday, Oct. 9.

Takyia Yahn and Lily Waddle lost to Washington’s Cambry Brown and Jillian Frederick, 1-6 1-6.

Brown and Frederick advanced to the District tournament.

On day two of the Sectional, Daugherty and Shull lost to Minford’s No. 1 seeded doubles team, 6-7, 6-3, 2-6.

They then lost to Marietta, 4-6, 1-6 and returned for a final match, defeating Minford, 6-3, 6-7, 6-3.

“It was a great couple of days down in Portsmouth,” Miami Trace head coach Seth Leach said. “We showed a lot of growth throughout the season. It was great (that) Kielyn and Ava (qualified) for Districts. They are both first-year players.

“We want to thank all of our seniors for their dedication and effort over the years,” Leach said. “The future of Lady Panther tennis is bright.”
