WAYNE TOWNSHIP — Approximately 35 first responders from eight local agencies worked together on Christmas morning to extinguish a house trailer fire in the 2000 block of the Bogus Road trailer park.

The Wayne Township Fire Department was dispatched to a structure fire Monday at around 11:30 a.m. and mutual aid was requested for an engine from the Washington C.H. Fire Department, a tanker from Bloomingburg Paint Marion Fire Department, and a tanker from Pic-a-Fay Fire Department. On arrival, Wayne Township Fire Chief Chris Wysong established scene command to a house trailer fully engulfed in fire.

Additional apparatuses and personnel were advised to respond to scene operations, according to Wysong.

A primary order was given to protect the exposures of the surrounding house trailers, reports said. The reported occupant was contacted a few house trailers down and confirmed no people were inside the trailer. However, her dog was still in a cage inside the structure.

Firefighters cut the structure’s exterior walls in the reported area of the dog’s location to determine if life-saving attempts could be made. According to reports, the cage was observed to have been destroyed by the fire and there were no signs of life in the animal.

Water shuttle operations began with a drop tank for Washington Fire’s engine 134, providing relay pumping to the primary engine from Wayne Twp. Fire. Extinguishment was conducted from the structure’s exterior until the situation was controlled at 12:28 p.m. Overhaul operations continued until no signs of fire existed.

The Ohio Fire Marshal’s Office was contacted, and the cause of the fire is still under investigation.

The local Red Cross office was contacted to assist the occupant, who reported she had moved in a few days before this incident, according to reports. Red Cross responders determined that the occupant was not an authorized resident. It was discovered that the trailer was believed to be vacant by neighbors who identified as staff to the property.

No one was reported injured and no families were displaced or lost Christmas gifts, according to Wysong.

“I am truly thankful for all the personnel who day-in and out dedicate themselves to helping others in our communities,” said Wysong. “Everyone worked hard together to ensure safe operations and get everyone home.”

The following agencies responded to the scene: Wayne Township Fire, Washington Fire, BPM Fire, Pic-A-Fay Fire, Fayette County Sheriff’s Office, Fayette Box65, AES, and Red Cross.
