The Washington Lady Lion wrestling team traveled to Olentangy Orange on Friday, Jan. 12 and Saturday, Jan. 13 to compete in the Pioneer Classic. This tournament featured dozens of female wrestlers that are currently ranked in the state.

Washington ended the weekend with four place winners.

At 105 pounds, Leah Marine came in fourth.

Abigail Forsythe took fourth at 110 pounds.

At 130 pounds, Lyndyn Gibbs was the champion, improving her record to 23-0. Gibbs is currently ranked number-one in the state at 130 pounds.

At 135 pounds, Kaylee Scott finished in sixth place.

Overall, the Lady Lions placed eighth out of 55 schools that participated in the two-day event.

Washington head coach Wes Gibbs spoke about the weekend.

“The girls had some pretty good matches this week. I think the 135-pound class had seven or eight girls ranked girls the top 10.

“Leah Marine made her debut at 105 pounds and she wrestled really well. With Leah at 105, Abigail Forsythe moved to 110 pounds. Abi getting fourth with giving up weight is amazing. Both girls knocked off some top girls.

“Kaylee Scott ended up sixth at 135 pounds. She’s getting her groove back. Kaylee knocked of the number-five girl in the state in the blood round. That’s pretty big.

“Lyndyn Gibbs won her second Pioneer Classic championship. She had the number-four ranked girl in the state in the championship match. It was close, but she wrestled pretty smart to get the win.

“Janessa Ayler and Alicia Navarette are on in-between weights right now, trying to decide what weight to move forward with. We had Alicia at 120 pounds this weekend which in my opinion was the toughest weight class there. She went 1-2. With Janessa wrestling at 190 pounds, she’s giving up a lot of weight but she’s competitive. She went 0-2, however made it to day two.

“All in all it was a great 2 days, we will re-group and re-focus and go compete at Jackson on January 21st.”

Washington is competing in the Brown Brothers Girls Invitational Tournament at Jackson High School on Sunday, Jan. 21.
